What to expect from couples therapy with me

Here is what happens from your first call to your first session, and how to prepare. You start with a free 15-minute call or book online through Headway, then meet by secure video.

Start with a free call

Call (513) 995-8532 for a free 15-minute consultation. Tell me briefly what is going on, ask anything you like, and we will both get a sense of whether we are a good fit. You can also skip this step and book directly.

Book through Headway

On my Headway page you can add your insurance to see an estimated cost, then choose a time. Headway handles your insurance information and billing. If you are not using insurance, my self-pay rates are $135 for individuals and $150 for couples.

Meet by secure video

Your first session is an opportunity for me to hear what brought you in, what you each hope will change, and what has been tried before. We will talk about goals and how we will work together.

Work on it together

From there, sessions focus on the patterns that keep you stuck and the changes you want. Depending on what is helpful, I may suggest small practices to try between sessions.

How to prepare

  • A private, quiet place where you will not be interrupted or overheard
  • A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, a microphone, and a stable internet connection
  • Headphones, if others are home
  • A few minutes to think about what you most want to change
  • Being physically located in Ohio at the time of the session

How I work

My approach draws on Emotion-Focused Therapy, Behavioral Couples Therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and solution-focused methods. I adapt to what you and your relationship need.

I'm a counselor with a personal faith. I do not use faith-based counseling approaches unless a client asks for them. Clients of any faith, or none, are welcome.

Common questions

Do we both need to be in the same room?

Many couples join together from one device, but it is not required. Each person needs to be physically located in Ohio during the session. If you plan to join from different places, mention it when you book.

What if we are not sure therapy is right for us?

That is a good reason to start with the free 15-minute call. You can ask questions and get a feel for my approach before deciding.

Is online therapy private?

Sessions take place on Headway's secure video platform. Confidentiality has the usual legal limits, which I will explain in our first session. It also helps to join from a private space where you will not be overheard.
